Mikael Owunna's piece Nommo Semi (Guardian of Space) from his Infinite Essence photography series was featured in the Afrofuturism: A History of Black Futures exhibition. This immersive show explored how Afrofuturism reimagined and reclaimed the past and present to create an empowered future for African Americans. Through a combination of art, music, and activism, the exhibition highlighted Afrofuturism’s engagement with African American history and popular culture, from the enslaved looking to the cosmos for freedom to the influence of artists like Sun Ra, OutKast, and Janelle Monae.
Owunna’s work contributed to this conversation by examining the intersections of Blackness, space, and spirituality. His piece was displayed alongside culturally significant objects like Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther costume and Trayvon Martin’s flight suit, underscoring Afrofuturism’s connections to Black liberation and the ongoing pursuit of social equality.
